Got the September Blues? Here’s a Playlist to Cheer You Up

angelolsen

Many of us acquire a ‘new term, new me’ mentality come September, regardless of whether or not we’re still in the educational system – even if your own departure from school or university was, in reality, years ago, all that time spent in compulsory education seems to have forever branded us with an inescapable need to turn over a new leaf as soon as the summer comes to a close and the equinox draws closer.

But then there are those who are sick of it. It may well be a new academic year, but it’s not actually a new year, is it? Some of us have long passed caring about spending the beginning of September panic-buying pencil cases in Paperchase; even more of us are sick of receiving spammy emails from clothes shops, encouraging us to stock up on ‘autumn essentials’. And then there’s the fact that Christmas now seems to start in December – yesterday I became much more stressed than I needed to be about spotting mince pies (complete with festive merchandising) by the till in the Co-op. If we need to start getting in the mood for any occasion way in advance, surely it should be Halloween?

September, enough already. For my fellow lost souls out there who aren’t quite yet ready to let go of the summer, I’ve compiled a little playlist for you to help ease you through the month. There’s something for everyone here, from the likes of Angel Olsen – whose latest album, My Woman, manages to be deeply moving and clever but completely non-alienating for those unfamiliar with Olsen’s work – to Crystal Castles, who are seemingly still going strong despite Alice Glass’s absence. Oh, and I challenge you not to become addicted to Cadenza’s latest track, PeopleCadenza is the brainchild of Oliver Rodigan, son of reggae royalty David Rodigan, so People‘s hypnotic dancehall vibes make a lot of sense. I first heard this track a few months ago during Rodigan’s set at Tramlines Festival, and it’s been ingrained in my mind ever since.
