Was I Ready for University Life… Or Just Rushed?

Over the Christmas break I’ve had a lot of time to think about my situation in life (I know, I know… a bit cringe).

That being said, I’ve been mainly mulling over life at university – nothing too ‘deep.’ It dawned on me recently that, right now, I am exactly halfway through my time as an undergraduate, which frightened me ever so slightly, serving as a reminder of just how quickly time has flown.

I came to thinking about a few friends, who, having taken a gap year to travel, are just finishing their first semester as first years. Though I knew that I, personally, wasn’t ready to fly abroad for a adventure with no ‘real’ adults there to save me if things went wrong, I was fairly sure that I was ready for university life. Lately, I can’t help thinking that although I might have been ready to fly the nest up the country in some senses, in many other ways I definitely rushed into uni too quickly because that’s what I was supposed to do, right? Get my degree over and done with by the time I’m 21 and then go and live.

Life, of course, almost never works out the way you think it will, something which I think university has taught me well. That’s one of the benefits of going off aged 18 and living on your own: you have to support yourself, there’s no ifs or buts about it. It’s certainly beneficial for developing life skills, and of course for widening your friendship group. However, from experience, I can say that going to university should not be rushed. I came from a grammar school background, where it pretty much played out that, if you weren’t applying through UCAS in upper sixth, there must be something wrong with you.

There are pros and cons to most things in life, and starting university fresh from school is no exception. I therefore impart this wisdom as an experienced university-goer onto any young minds keen to leave school behind and become an ‘adult’ in the big bright city; if I could go back in time and give my past self a piece of advice, it would be that there is no rush. Make sure you are absolutely ready.
